Zohran Mamdani Promises a 'New Era' for The Big Apple in Inaugural Address

- No-cost bus transit
- A rent freeze for about 1 million households

The Basic Challenges of Governing
Traditionally, New York mayors are evaluated by their ability in providing city upkeep: sanitation, reducing the rodent problem, repairing roadways, and ensuring reliable transit operation.
Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams touted his team's public safety record, pointing to record low numbers of homicides and gun violence in 2025, with 301 homicides reported.
As his administration starts, Mamdani and his wife will move from their Astoria apartment to the stately Gracie Mansion. The previous occupant offered a unusual piece of advice about a reputed friendly ghost in the home, which reportedly only troubles those who do not act to “do right by the city.”
Mamdani ended his speech with a direct declaration: “The work has only just begun.”
