The former Brazilian leader has been detained after authorities found he posed a definite escape threat while under home confinement.

The former head of state was convicted of orchestrating a military coup in last fall and sentenced more than over two decades in incarceration, but he continued under home detention pending appeals.

High Court Judge Justice Moraes said the action to imprison the 70-year-old politician was a safety action after "new facts" came to light.

This included trying to remove his tracking device and a invitation to a supporters' gathering that could "allow for a possible escape.

In a filing authorising the arrest, the judge said intelligence from the unit overseeing the former president's confinement suggested the ex-president's "intention to break the tracking monitor to ensure success in his flight.
